European Waste Prevention Week

Wednesday 16th November 2022

CALVIÀ PROMOTES AWARENESS ON WASTE REDUCTION IN THE EUROPEAN WASTE PREVENTION WEEK

One of the planned actions is the launching of the campaign to encourage the use of vaginal cups that will be delivered for free to primary and secondary education schools and to women in the municipality who request them.

On the occasion of the European waste prevention week, which takes place from 19th to 27th November, Calvià Town Hall, through the Department of the Environment, launches a series of actions to, as explained by the councillor of the Environment and Ecological Transition, Rafel Sedano "raise public awareness on the sustainable management of resources and waste, with one of the focuses placed on textile materials".

The European initiative is planned as a week to publicise waste reduction strategies, promote sustainable actions, explain the tasks carried out by the various actors through concrete examples of waste reduction, or change daily behaviour in terms of consumption and waste production, amongst others.

Campaign to promote the use of menstrual cups

One of the actions that is launched within the framework of this European week is the campaign to promote the use of the menstrual cup amongst the women in the municipality.

Rafel Sedano points out that the campaign will be aimed at girls and women. Therefore, 1.500 devices will be delivered to the primary and secondary educations schools of Calvià, and to the women in the municipality who have previously requested through a form that they will have at their disposal on the municipal website and on the Town Hall's social networks, while supplies last.

With the launch of this campaign, it is intended to reach several milestones, in addition to the advantages of using menstrual cups.

First of all, the generation of waste is significantly reduced since the useful life of a menstrual cup is 10 years, while a woman can use up to 12.000 tampons or pads throughout her life, which is equivalent to 6 kg per year.

The measure also has an impact on considerable economic savings, given that over 10 years the average cost of traditional menstrual hygiene products can exceed 600 euros, in the case of tampons, and 300 euros in the case of pads. The cost of a menstrual cup is less than 25 euros.

The use of this device also has a direct benefit for women in terms of comfort, since it can be used for up to 12 hours and can be used while sleeping. And it promotes female sexual health because they are hypoallergenic materials, which maintain the vaginal pH and lack bleaching agents.

Other actions

In addition to this action, the Department of the Environment has organised a series of workshops, such as the vermicomposting training workshops to take place on 19th and 24th November at the Galatzó public estate and at the Son Bugadelles urban garden, respectively, and in which the expert Lucia Curti, from Lombriz Urbana Baleares, will teach vermicomposting at all levels: at home, in the garden or in the field.

On its behalf, the Regional Ministry of the Environment is organising a children's workshop on waste prevention on 25th November, at a stand that will be located in Santa Ponça, from 4 to 6 p.m., where an environmental educator will inform interested people on the need to apply the 3Rs: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. Likewise, and following this year's thematic axis, information will also be provided on the impacts of the textile industry and on how to promote its recycling and reuse. Along the same lines, a clothing recycling workshop will be held, led by the Fundació Deixalles.

In addition, on 26th November, at 11 a.m., at Sa Societat in Calvià, there will be an 'environmental vermouth', a dialogue with entities that carry out clean-ups on the coast and environmental activities in the municipality of Calvià.
