48 national and international teams will participate in this sixth edition
The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has attended the presentation of the Santa Ponça Cup Grassroots Football Tournament, which this year celebrates its sixth edition and which has the collaboration of Calvià Town Hall. The event was also attended by the deputy mayor for Sports, Eva Serra, and the councillor for Santa Ponça, Nati Francés.
The tournament directors, Tomás Gibert and Manuel Chanla, have explained that it is a fully consolidated international sporting event, which since 2016, when it was held for the first time, has so far gone from 32 to 48 teams. In this edition, U-12 and U-10 teams from England, Austria, Italy and Portugal; teams from the Islands and the municipality, such as Santa Ponça CF and CD Son Caliu, and teams such as Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia, Betis, Atlético de Madrid, Villarreal or Nàstic de Tarragona will participate, amongst others.
The mayor of Calvià has assured that, every year, Santa Ponça awaits this tournament, which will have more than 10.000 direct overnight stays, and that "it is extraordinary for both, the area that begins the season and for the destination brand". Alfonso Rodríguez Badal added that the Town Hall will always be on the side of an event that, in addition to facilitating the enjoyment of the passion that participants have for practicing their favourite sport, promotes the values of sport.
The Santa Ponça Cup will take place from 4th to 9th April, and will begin on Tuesday afternoon with a match by Fundación Mallorca Integra.
750 players between the ages of 10 and 12; and 150 people from the coaching staff will participate in the tournament. 120 matches will be played, in the preliminary phase, and 30 in the final phase. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 9th April at 1:30 p.m. All matches will be played at the Santa Ponça sports centre.
