Posidonia campaign presented in Calvią

Monday, 1st June 2020

The Posidonia Surveillance Service campaign has been presented in Calvià with novelties such as the incorporation of 14 underwater robots

The Mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has attended the presentation of this year's Posidonia Surveillance Service campaign, which was led by the Regional Minister for the Environment and Territory, Miquel Mir.

The Minister explained that, this year, he wanted to present the campaign in Portals Vells to acknowledge Calvià as the first Town Hall to complete an Action Plan on beaches adapted to the Posidonia Protection Decree and which has been endorsed by the General Directorate of Natural Areas and Biodiversity. (Attached below there's a link to the Regional Ministrry's press release)

The Mayor has explained that the Plan, in which the Departments of Coastine, Environment and Calvià 2000 are involved, foresees:

A protocol for the removal of dry posidonia at the beginning of the Summer, which is not thrown away, but is reused in two areas. On the one hand, it is used as fertiliser or cattle bed in different agricultural farms of the municipality, which have previously requested it, and, on the other, Calvià 2000 stores it, in a storage area, for its subsequent return to the beaches during the winter, to preserve them from possible storm damage.

Another of the actions included in the plan is the Posidonia protection with a beaconing project that will involve removing 200 metres of beacons, to move anchorages further away. (Specifically, in Portals Vells, where the presentation has taken place, this beacon will involve uniting the three coves).

And a third action, which will be the installation of ecological anchorages and anchorage regulation, for the control and regulation of anchorages.

Finally, an important action that Calvià carries out, year after year, is that of raising awareness. Through the Environment Department, awareness campaigns are carried out with NGOs every summer, including workshops, cleaning activities, etc.

The presentation act has also been attended by the deputy mayor and the councillor for Environment and Ecological Transition, Rafel Sedano and Marga Plomer, and the councillor for the Portals Vells area, Marc López, where the event has taken place.
