Ecovidrio, Calvià Town Hall and Calvià 2000 present the Recicla vidrio (Recycle Glass) campaign for women, on the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day
Ecovidrio has installed 4 pink containers in the municipality.
Agatha Ruiz de la Prada has designed a mini igloo whose benefits will go to the Sandra Ibarra Foundation for Solidarity Against Cancer.
From today and over the next few weeks, four pink igloos will be located in the Passeig Mar in Palmanova and on Riu Sil street, just in front of the Santa Ponça Health Centre. This is the Recycle Glass for women campaign, an Ecovidrio initiative that aims to mobilise citizens to recycle glass containers and thus contribute to a solidarity cause and fight against breast cancer.
The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, visited this morning the collection point of Palmanova accompanied by the area's delegate councillor, Paquita Muñoz, and wanted to highlight Calvià's interest in being part of a project that, on the one hand, invites the population to work on recycling and, consequently, for the environment preservation and, on the other, it joins a solidarity cause for the breast cancer prevention and information.
The Calvià 2000 manager, Javier González, explained the progress being made in terms of recycling in the municipality, in which this municipal company collected last August 2,520 tons of glass, 4% more than in the same month of the previous year.
The glass recycled in the containers of the campaign, which is celebrated for the fourth consecutive year, will be transformed into a donation from Ecovidrio to the Sandra Ibarra Foundation for Solidarity Against Cancer, whose director is again the ambassadress of the project.
This year, the campaign has spread to more than 60 cities throughout the national territory such as Palma de Mallorca, Madrid, Seville or Barcelona, in order to raise awareness amongst a greater number of people. Thus, Ecovidrio has installed more than 340 pink containers throughout the country.
As a symbol of awareness and solidarity with breast cancer, Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada has designed a special minigloo for the occasion. The minigloo can be purchased through the web www.miniglu.es and the benefits will go to the Sandra Ibarra Foundation for Solidarity Against Cancer to contribute to the prevention, information and awareness of this disease.
Glass recycling data in Calvià
According to the latest data for 2018, people living in Calvià recycled a total of 3,372 tons of glass containers, which means that each inhabitant recycled on average 68 kg.
Regarding the containerisation rate, Calvià is placed with an average of 104 inhabitants per container, with a total of 474 igloos installed for glass container waste.
About Ecovidrio
Ecovidrio is the non-profit entity responsible for managing the recycling of glass containers waste in Spain. After the approval of the Law on Packaging and Packaging Waste in 1997 and the start of its operations in 1998, it became the managing entity of a recycling model that guarantees a complete service and to which all citizens have access. In terms of financing, 8,000 packaging companies make possible the recycling system with their contribution through the green point.
Ecovidrio's work stands out for guaranteeing high quality recycling through the container, strengthening containerisation and collection infrastructures, investing in plans and resources aimed at increasing the recycling of glass containers in the hospitality industry, mobilising citizens through awareness campaigns and promoting the prevention and ecodesign of packaging.
In the last two decades, the Ecovidrio system has allowed the exponential growth of the recycling rate, which has gone from 31.3% in the year 2000 to 76.5%, according to the entity for the year 2018.
The recycling of glass containers is a fundamental element to contribute to sustainable development, promote the transition to the circular economy and fight against climate change.
In addition, the recycling of glass containers is an activity that supports the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals; specifically, it has an impact on the objectives 11-Sustainable cities and communities, 12-Responsible production and consumption and 13-Climate action.
About the Sandra Ibarra Foundation
The Sandra Ibarra Foundation (https://fundacionsandraibarra.org) is a non-profit organisation focused on cancer prevention, research and survival.
For eleven years, the Foundation has been funding scholarships and promoting public campaigns to deal with cancer with positivity and rigor, not only from a clinical or scientific point of view, but also from a social one, encouraging the media to banish the war language, for public administrations to develop the humanisation in healthcare and that professional medical organisations open up to the debate and opinion of patients.
At present, the Foundation is developing the Escuela de Vida (Life School), the first school of cancer patients and survivors, whose main objective is to improve the life quality and well-being of these people.
